Texas Longhorns head coach Vic Schaefer recently panned the voting for a national point guard award.
“When [Rori Harmon’s] done playing, y’all … The numbers that she’s gonna have, there won’t be another player in the history of women’s college basketball,” Schaefer said. “And yet she still hadn’t been awarded the [Nancy Lieberman Award for] point guard of the year.”

Schaefer seemed to take exception to the voting for the Nancy Lieberman Award, which recognizes the nation’s top point guard. The winner of the award is typically honored for their exceptional leadership, playmaking and ball-handling skills. Harmon, the Longhorns‘ starting point guard, was recently selected to a midseason top 10 list for the Lieberman award but has never won it during her five seasons at Texas.
On Thursday, she added to her case for national award recognition during a 77-64 win over LSU. The senior finished her night with 11 points, five assists, and six steals against the Tigers. Harmon’s sixth steal broke the all-time steal record (351) for Texas. In addition to leading the program in steals, Harmon also owns the Longhorns’ all-time assists record with 889 assists and counting. She’s the only active Division I player to own both records for a women’s basketball program.
“With [Rori Harmon], I’m frustrated more than anything because I think the kid deserves way more, ” Schaefer said. “I’ve had some really good players in my career, but I haven’t had anybody like her, talking specifically about Rori [Harmon]. The statistics demand that people give her credit. That’s it. At the end of the day, the stats are the stats. Give me a break. It frustrates the hell out of me. So I’ll toot that horn from now until she’s done.”
Still, the Texas coach wasn’t done. He shared another thought about the Lieberman award.

“They can throw that dang award away if they don’t give it to her this year,” he said. “It don’t mean nothing.”
