Vic Schaefer will continue to lead the Texas women’s basketball program for the foreseeable future.
At its meeting this upcoming week, the Texas Board of Regents will be asked to approve a contract extension for Schaefer. Schaefer’s current deal at Texas takes him through the 2026-27 season, but this proposed deal adds three years to his contract.
Schaefer’s extension does not add any money to the years currently on his contract. He would receive slight raises for the three seasons in the amended deal and the final year would come with a salary of $2.6 million.
Schaefer’s deal may be considered a bargain to the Texas accountants. ESPN reported last month that South Carolina coach Dawn Staley’s new extension came with a $4-million salary and annual escalators. UConn’s Geno Auriemma and LSU’s Kim Mulkey both make more than $3 million. It should be noted that Staley, Auriemma and Mulkey are three of the four active women’s basketball coaches who have won a national championship.
Schaefer is in the midst of his fifth season at Texas. He has led the Longhorns to a 134-34 record and three Elite Eight appearances.
Texas is 25-2 this season, and the third-ranked Longhorns are currently tied with South Carolina for first place in the SEC standings with an 11-1 mark in conference play. Texas will host No. 5 LSU (25-1, 10-1) on Sunday afternoon.
