Notre Dame knew facing Syracuse on the road to begin ACC play wouldn’t be the easiest task. After all, it lost both games in this rivalry last year. More importantly, it had to avoid a letdown coming off its overtime win over Texas and heading into another big game against UConn.
Fortunately, the Irish passed the test at hand with flying colors and earned a dominant 93-62 victory over the Orange. It wasn’t always easy, but the important thing is they got the job done.
The Irish (7-2, 1-0) had trouble taking care of the ball at first with nine first-quarter turnovers and only led the Orange (4-6, 0-1) by one. The second quarter was a defensive struggle as they only held a 15-9 scoring advantage, but it gave them a seven-point halftime lead.
The Irish quit messing around in the third quarter and completely dominated, outscoring the Orange, 29-13. Although the fourth quarter showed signs of the Irish getting complacent, Niele Ivey got her team refocused, and the blowout victory that was meant to be indeed came to pass.
Three Irish players achieved double-doubles. Sonia Citron had her first of the season with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Hannah Hidalgo, who scored her 1,000th career point, and Olivia Miles finished with 24 and 20 points respectively with both grabbing 10 boards. Kate Koval added 12 points.
