Traverse Moore, offense take step forward for DeWitt football in win over Mason

DEWITT — Prior to this season, Traverse Moore last found himself under center and running the show at quarterback when he was in eighth grade.

The senior and Central Michigan commit is gradually settling in as the leader of the offense at quarterback for the DeWitt football team and took another step forward Friday, Sept. 5, in a 44-37 victory over Mason.

Moore, who was a Division 3-4 all-state selection as a running back in 2024, used his legs to help power DeWitt (2-0) to the non-league Week 2 victory. He delivered one of the top rushing performances of the week in Greater Lansing, running for 248 yards and three touchdowns.

“I think Trav is one of the best players in the state,” DeWitt coach Rob Zimmerman said. “Obviously, I’m biased, but his demeanor tonight was phenomenal. He never got rattled and he made plays. He had some huge runs for us. He’s a heck of a leader and a heck of a high school football player. I wouldn’t want to have anyone else running the show for us with the experience that he has and the tenacity that he has.”

Moore had touchdown runs of 18, 37 and 47 yards while helping the Panthers more than double their point total from their 21-3 Week 1 win over Haslett. He also had a long run of 66 yards that set up a score for a teammate in the opening half.

“It was just being confident in myself and being confident in the coaches and the plays they are calling,” Moore said of his performance. “I was super happy with how we played tonight and a lot of guys dug down to make plays.”

Moore, who is rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports, shook off an early fumble that came on DeWitt’s opening drive to put together his big night. The Panthers finished with 492 yards of offense against a Mason team coming off a shutout win over Holt in Week 1.

“It’s always next-play mentality,” Moore said. “I took that and after that first play it was next play and I came out and we did what we had to do.”

While his running ability played a large part in his big night, Moore also completed 6-of-9 passing attempts for 58 yards and a touchdown. He is 9-of-16 passing for 103 yards and two scores through two weeks

Zimmerman has been pleased with the job Moore transitioning into an all-around quarterback.

“He’s thrown really, really well,” Zimmerman said. “A lot of people think he’s a running back and he can’t throw, but Trav has got a good arm and when he needs to throw he’s fine to be able to do the job. We’re actually pleasantly surprised with where he’s at throwing the football. He’s been better than anyone anticipated.”
