Ty Simpson continues to turn heads in fall camp, including more praise from Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer following the second scrimmage originally appeared on A to Z Sports.
Alabama continues to prepare for the 2025 college football season. On Saturday, the Crimson Tide held their second and final scrimmage of fall camp. Soon after the scrimmage, head coach Kalen DeBoer took to the podium to answer questions from the media, which included some encouraging updates about the quarterbacks.

“All the quarterbacks, I thought, came out there again today and did a great job, and that was the same thing as the last scrimmage,” DeBoer told reporters. “And specifically, Ty, today, I thought he came out and executed the offense. Just continues to be steady, finds his times to make the plays.
“Today, he actually used his speed again. And that’s something that people will probably underestimate as we go through the year, just with his ability to make plays and keep plays alive. But he was, I thought, he was steady. He was consistent. Looking here, probably a higher completion percentage than what he had last scrimmage, maybe not quite as explosives. I think that’s a tribute to our defense and what they did as well.
“So good both scrimmages for him, and just continue to make the progress. And I think building the team and getting the momentum going when we knew we needed to do it, and that’s allowing us to have three weeks of prep building our team for Florida State.”

A source confirmed that Ty Simpson had a rushing touchdown while also confirming a touchdown pass to Ryan Williams. Not only that, but the source doesn’t think Alabama’s new starting quarterback had many incompletions outside of two drops, one of which came from Cole Adams and the other from Jalen Hale.
Alabama’s offense didn’t have many explosive plays on Saturday, which DeBoer confirmed. But some of that is likely due to the way the defense was playing the offense. Ryan Grubb mentioned earlier this week that the offense had gone six-straight practices of hitting their “explosive play number,” and that the offense has been doing that pretty consistently throughout fall camp.
I wouldn’t be surprised if that was an emphasis for Kane Wommack and company in the second scrimmage. What’s encouraging about that from Simpson’s perspective is that he didn’t force anything or push to hit those numbers. He simply took what the defense gave him and produced another really encouraging performance. That’s where his experience on the college level comes into play.
We didn’t get many specifics about Keelon Russell or Austin Mack (or at least not yet), but one source did say that all three “looked sharp” and were comfortable operating the offense. The battle continues for QB2 behind Simpson, and both players are doing everything they can to win the job.
