Tyran Stokes Obsession Led Mark Pope to Miss Out on Key Prospects, Insider Confirms

Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats heavily scouted the No. 1 prospect of the recruiting class of 2026. However, in the end, the consensus five-star recruit ended up making his verbal commitment to the Kansas Jayhawks last month.

On Thursday’s episode of “Here Comes the Boom” podcast, insider Jack Pilgrim discussed how Kentucky prioritizing Tyran Stokes hampered their entire 2026 recruiting process.

“Especially knowing some of the other options that were on the table and actually wanted to be Kentucky Wildcats,” Pilgrim said. “And I did kind of get, for the very first time, a sense of remorse, regret, how, what could have been, at least on Kentucky side, about how everything, you know, hindsight is 20/20, obviously you’re gonna say that when you come up empty-handed with none of them.

“But, the Tyron was really kind of a pivot point for a lot of these kids. And I heard from sources close to several other top recruits on Kentucky’s big board that, like, even from their side, that Kentucky had real momentum and they wanted to go but weren’t going to wait around of Tyran Stokes. Didn’t want to be a backup plan to Tyran Stokes, or just flat out didn’t want to play with Tyran Stokes.”
