Former Lipscomb Academy football coach and NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer was fired by UAB on Oct. 12, the school announced.
His dismissal comes a day after a 55-33 loss to Florida Atlantic dropped the Blazers to 2-4 this season and extended their losing streak to three.

UAB was 9-21 under Dilfer, who spent 13 seasons in the NFL and was named to the Pro Bowl once.
“We have made a decision to part ways with head football coach Trent Dilfer,” UAB athletic director Mark Ingram said in a statement the team released on social media. “We agree that − unfortunately − our on-field performance has not lived up to the standard we have for the program.”
Ingram announced that Alex Mortensen will be the team’s interim coach for the rest of the season.
He also had a few more words about Dilfer.
“While his efforts did not translate into a winning record, each young man who played for him will be a better person as a result,” Ingram said.
He was hired before the 2023 season, when he signed a five-year contract that paid in $1.3 million annually, plus incentives. It was his first college coaching job.

Dilfer won two TSSAA state titles at Lipscomb Academy, where he was 44-10, including 26-1 in his final two seasons.
