UConn women’s basketball flattens DePaul, 86-40

UConn women’s basketball extended its winning streak to 40 with an 86-40 victory over the DePaul Blue Demons on Wednesday in Chicago.

After dropping 27 points in her last outing, Azzi Fudd stayed hot with 25 points behind a 4-6 night from three. Meanwhile, Sarah Strong did it all with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. KK Arnold also hit double-figures with 12 points to go with five assists, four rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Kayleigh Heckel led the team with six assists alongside six points and four boards while Ashlynn Shade had eight points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Huskies assisted on 30 of 37 baskets and finished with more points in the paint (54) than the Blue Demons had total (40). They extend their conference winning streak to 60 games and captured their 19th straight victory by at least 25 points.

After the teams traded baskets early, UConn quickly pulled away. The Huskies made 10 consecutive shots in one stretch and piled up 27 of the next 32 points. Fudd started fast with 13 points on 5-5 shooting in the opening quarter.

Then UConn’s offense went cold. It managed just 13 points in the second period and only out-scored the hosts by three. Still, the Huskies went into halftime leading by 24.

Out of the break, UConn put the game away. It used separate spurts of 7-0 and 8-0 while holding the Blue Demons to just three baskets in the frame to extend the gap past 30. Arnold opened the fourth quarter on a personal 6-0 run as the Huskies cruised to a 46-point win.

UConn improves to 23-0 overall and 12-0 in Big East play. Next, the Huskies will return home to take on Butler in Hartford for a noon tip-off on Saturday.
