Last season, North Carolina had a challenging yet manageable non-conference slate. However, that changes this season with Michael Malone at the helm.
Everything about the 2026–27 non‑conference slate suggests a different kind of test — not just who UNC plays, but when and where. Marquee names, high‑stakes neutral sites, and even a familiar in‑state annoyance are scattered across the early calendar, turning what used to be a slow build into something closer to a weekly examination of who the Tar Heels really are.

The shift isn’t obvious at first glance. There are still regional opponents, buy games, and dates that look routine on a schedule release. But tucked in between them are matchups that carry the weight of recent March runs, conference reputations, and long memories from past meetings. It’s the kind of mix that can turn an ordinary Wednesday night into the sort of evening people remember in March.
Here are three takeaways from the released non‑conference slate, along with the full schedule and what each team accomplished last season.
It’s harder than last year’s

Last season, UNC had some challenging matchups against Kansas, Michigan State, Kentucky and Ohio State. However, while all four made the NCAA Tournament, only two of those games were against ranked opponents, and the rest of the schedule featured Quad 3 and Quad 4 opponents.

This season is going to be much different, as six of UNC’s opponents (Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, NC State and West Virginia) won 20 or more games last season, and all but West Virginia made the NCAA Tournament.
Of those six teams, Arkansas, Illinois and Kentucky will all likely be in the top 25 going into the 2026-27 season.
UNC will take on a Final Four team

North Carolina will host a high-profile game against the Illinois Fighting Illini, who are fresh off an appearance in the Final Four.
The game is scheduled for January 30 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN, marking the first meeting between the Tar Heels and Illini since the 2010-11 season. UNC and Illinois announced a non-conference showdown for January 30, 2027, at Bridgestone Arena.

This will be their first matchup since 2010, with a series record of four wins each. The most notable game was the 2005 National Championship, where the Tar Heels defeated Illinois.
UNC-NC State will play each other twice

UNC and NC State are no longer locked-in partners in ACC basketball scheduling, so the longtime rivals were slated to play just once this season. That was the case last season, when UNC lost to the Wolfpack in Raleigh in their lone meeting.
However, NC State and UNC are set to face off at the Greensboro Coliseum in a non-conference game on December 15th. The game was first reported by Cory Smith of PackPower247, and Inside Carolina confirmed the report shortly after.

Under the new ACC schedule model, the Tar Heels and Wolfpack will play only once this year, as they did in the 2025-26 season. Adding this game as a non-conference matchup ensures they get two games in, as in previous years.
NC State beat UNC in Raleigh last season under Will Wade. UNC is set to host NC State sometime in 2027 as part of the ACC schedule.
This season’s conference game will be played at the Smith Center in Chapel Hill, but the programs have decided to play a game at the Greensboro Coliseum that won’t count as an ACC game. It will be a non-conference game.
It should be noted that the UNC-State game has not been formally finalized as of this writing, but it is fully expected to happen.
