USA Swimming Confirms Olympic Trials Return to Indianapolis in 2028

For the second straight summer, USA Swimming is in Indianapolis this week for a major trials meet. It’ll be back in 2028.

USA Swimming on Tuesday confirmed reports that Olympic Trials will return to Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium in 2028 ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics.

The decision had first been reported last week.

The partnership with Indiana Sports Corp. set attendance records for swim meets in 2024 ahead of the Paris games. The return to the home o the Indianapolis Colts means American swimmers will get to compete in two football stadiums that summer, with SoFi Stadium the Olympic venue for swimming.

“The Olympic Trials are unlike any other event in our sport – they represent the pinnacle of competition, emotion, and national pride,” USA Swimming Interim CEO Bob Vincent said in a press release. “Indianapolis and Lucas Oil Stadium provide the perfect venue to prepare our athletes and coaches for the scale of the LA28 Games at SoFi stadium. We are proud to partner again with the Indiana Sports Corp and the city of Indianapolis. Securing our host location now allows us to build training plans with confidence and best prepares our athletes to dominate the next three years.”

“We are thrilled to welcome the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming back to Indianapolis and Lucas Oil Stadium in 2028,” Indiana Sports Corp President Patrick Talty said. “The 2024 Trials epitomized our mission of impacting the community through sports and showcased, once again, why Indy is the best host city in the country. We’re grateful to USA Swimming and USOPC for the continued partnership and the opportunity to host this event. We look forward to all lanes returning to Indy in 2028.”

Three temporary pools will again be installed at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Indiana Convention Center will again be the home of USA Swimming’s Toyota Aqua Zone for fan activation, and the USA Swimming House for hospitality is also part of the program.

USA Swimming set attendance records in 2024, drawing more than 285,000 fans across all session, a 60 percent increase from Trials in 2021. The event generated more than $132 million in economic impact and was recognized with the Fan Engagement Award – Governing Body at the International Sports Awards, presented by the International Sports Convention.
