The latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll is out. As expected, Auburn suffered a slight dump after dropping its first SEC loss of the season to No. 6 Florida last Saturday at Neville Arena.
The good news is that Auburn slipped to just No. 2 following its loss, thanks to Clemson’s upset win over then-No. 2 Duke mere hours after Florida’s defeat of Auburn. The bad news is that rival Alabama benefits from both losses by claiming the top spot in the poll heading into another busy week of college basketball, guaranteeing a No. 1 vs. No. 2 battle in Tuscaloosa this Saturday.
The SEC dominates the top five as four teams earn a place in this week’s poll. Following Alabama and Auburn are No. 3 Florida and No. 4 Tennessee. Duke falls to No. 5 while Houston, Purdue, St. John’s, Texas A&M, and Iowa State round out the top 10.
In all, eight SEC teams earn a spot in the coaches poll. Kentucky falls four places to No. 19, Missouri drops six places to No. 22, and Ole Miss returns to the top 25 by sliding in at No. 23. Mississippi State sits in the “receiving votes” category after earning a road win at Georgia last Saturday.
