USC Sweeps Arizona in Former Pac-12 Showdown

USC men’s and women’s swimming and diving remains unbeaten in duals as the Trojans beat the Wildcats on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

The women’s team downed Arizona 193-107, while USC men beat the Wildcats 169.5-130.5. With the wins, both squads improve to 2-0 on the season.

The USC women opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay as Caroline Famous, Asley McMillan, Genevieve Sasseville and Vasilissa Buinaia combined to post a 1:37.94.






The Trojans swept the 1000y freestyle as Ella Ristic led a 1-2-3 USC finish in the event. Ristic clocked a 9:52.23 for first, while Marlene Kahler (9:55.39) and Alexa Wong (10:03.10) finished second and third, respectively.

On the men’s side, sophomore All-American Krzysztof Chmielewski blasted an 8:48.78 to win the 1000y freestyle for USC – the sixth fastest time in the country this season. Chmielewski also claimed the 200 butterfly (1:42.37) and 500 freestyle (4:22.86).

Sophomore All-American and Olympian Minna Abraham blasted the fastest time in the country so far this season in the 200y freestyle, touching first in 1:42.01 for an NCAA automatic cut. Abraham returned later in the day to claim the 100 freestyle in 47.96, the third fastest time in the country this season. Competing in the 100 fly, Abraham touched second in a personal best time of 53.17.

USC fifth-year Caroline Famous finished first in the 100y backstroke, clocking a 52.33 to earn an NCAA B cut in the event. Famous later claimed the 50 freestyle in 22.45.

Sophomore Olympian Michal Chmielewski claimed the 100y back on the men’s side, posting a 47.21 to finish first. Chmielewski was second in the 100 fly in 47.19.

Freshman Junhao Chan clocked a 52.66 to tie for first in the 100y breaststroke with Arizona’s Daniel Young. Chan later claimed the 200 breaststroke in an NCAA B cut time of 1:55.53.

Sophomore Macky Hodges led a 1-2 USC finish in the 200 backstroke, clocking a 1:54.76. Freshman Isabella Schneider was second in 1:58.39.

USC sophomore Sanberk Oktar led a 1-2-3-4 Trojan sweep in the 200 IM, touching first in 1:46.65. Ben Dillard was second in 1:48.31, followed by Chris O’Grady in third (1:49.05) and Luke Maurer (1:49.16) in fourth.

USC closed the meet with another relay victory, as the Trojan quartet of Abraham, Vasilissa Buinaia, Hodges and Ristic combined to clock a 3:15.23 in the 400 free relay.

Wildcat wins

Arizona’s Ralph Daleiden Ciuferri, Daniel Young, Haakon Naughton and Thomas Lukminas won the 200 medley relay (1:25.78). Lukminas won the 200 free in 1:33.95. Daleiden Ciuferri won the 100 free in 43.40. Will Meyers won the 200 back (1:45.91). Naughton won the 100 fly (46.75).

Lars Kuljus, Daleiden Ciuferri, Jadan Nabor and Lukminas won the 400 free relay in 2:52.69.

Eleni Gewalt won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.51. Brooke Earley won 3-meter diving (294.90) and 1-meter (298.45). Kelsey Wasikowski won the 200 breaststroke (2:13.48). Malia Rausch won the 500 free (4:45.67).
