Vanderbilt football is set to lose a member of its defensive staff.
Jimmy Thompson, who coached the stars (a hybrid linebacker/safety position), is set to be hired as a defensive backs coach for the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL, according to a report from CBS Sports.

After playing at Notre Dame, where Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea was formerly the defensive coordinator, Thompson has been a member of the Commodores‘ staff since 2021, first as a graduate assistant and then a defensive analyst before becoming the stars coach. Among the players Thompson coached were Randon Fontenette and CJ Taylor.
Thompson is the second core member of the Commodores’ staff to depart this offseason. Quarterbacks coach Garrett Altman left to be the offensive coordinator at Arkansas State and took two of Vanderbilt’s backup quarterbacks, Drew Dickey and Jeremy St-Hilaire, with him.
