Vanderbilt women’s basketball put the SEC on notice with its wins over Tennessee and Alabama a week apart.
Star freshman Mikayla Blakes, recently named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week, figured prominently in both wins. She hit the game-winning shot against the Lady Vols, then dropped 33 points on the road in Tuscaloosa, helping the Commodores to a 66-64 win in a game where they trailed by nine in the third quarter.
Blakes and Khamil Pierre both rank in the top five of the SEC in scoring. Pierre is second with 21.7 points per game while Blakes is fourth at 21. Pierre is also second in the league in rebounding, with 10.3 per game, and is one of two players in the conference to average a double-double.
Florida’s leading scorer is freshman Liv McGill, who averages 15.9 points per game.
