ACC Championships, Day 5: Virginia Women, Cal Men Wrap Up Dominant Conference Titles

The ACC Championships concluded Saturday evening with the University of Virginia women winning another conference crown amid an era of national dominance while the California men claimed the men’s title in their first year in the conference. The Virginia women scored 1451.5 points, more than 300 ahead of Stanford (1141) while Louisville placed third (935.5). For the men, Cal scored 1271.5 points to take down Stanford (1065) and NC State (1021).

The Virginia women posted NCAA and U.S. Open records in the 800 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay during their dominant victory, and on the final night of the meet, Claire Curzan and sisters Gretchen Walsh and Alex Walsh each added individual wins Saturday evening before they came up just short of another relay record in the 400 freestyle relay. As for the Cal men, Gabriel Jett and Jack Alexy each claimed wins on the final night before the Bears grabbed a 400 free relay title.

The evening started out with the women’s and men’s 1650 freestyle, with wins going to Stanford’s Aurora Roghair and NC State’s Owen Lloyd, who rebounded from a controversial disqualification after he appeared to win the event at last season’s ACC meet. Later in the session, both Walsh sisters posted the country’s top times in their respective events, as did Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti in the men’s 200 breaststroke.

Women’s 1650 Freestyle

Virginia’s Cavan Gormsen was the winner of the ACC title in the 1650 free last season, and early on in the top heat of this year’s event, she tried to keep pace with the top-seeded swimmer, Aurora Roghair of Stanford. But by the time the swimmers were one-third of the way through the event, Roghair was in the lead, and she would never surrender that advantage. Roghair notched 28-mid splits before getting even quicker during the final third of the race despite a lack of competition.

Roghair finished in 15:40.90, four-and-a-half seconds behind her season-best mark posted in November at the Texas Invite. Roghair is the No. 2 swimmer in the country behind Texas freshman Jillian Cox.

Cal fifth-year swimmer Maya Geringer came on strong during the second half of the race to pass Gormsen and claim second in 15:51.01, moving from seventh to sixth in the country. Gormsen took third in 15:54.05. The other swimmers to break 15:00 were Louisville’s Leticia Fassina Romao (15:58.57) and NC State’s Chase Travis (15:59.15).

Men’s 1650 Freestyle

Cal’s Lucas Henveaux entered the ACC Championships with the country’s top time in the 1650 freestyle, and after winning the 500 free three days earlier, he was in the top spot in the early going of the 1650. But the race completely changed around the halfway point as NC State’s Owen Lloyd took over and moved into the lead.

Lloyd was swimming with some extra emotion after appearing to win the conference title in the mile last year before being disqualified. While celebrating his win, Lloyd fell into the lane of teammate Ross Dant, who had already finished, but other swimmers in the heat were still racing, so Lloyd’s result was nullified. This time, though, Lloyd pulled almost five seconds ahead of the field to leave no doubt.

Lloyd touched in 14:31.64, putting him into No. 5 in the national rankings. The only swimmers to go faster are Texas’ David Johnston, Henveaux, Texas’ Rex Maurer and Kentucky’s Levi Sandidge.

Stanford’s Liam Custer took second in 14:36.44, moving him to No. 6 in the country, while Henveaux fell to third (14:40.09). Another Wolfpack swimmer, Lance Norris, took fourth in 14:42.53

After celebrating the conference title, Lloyd said in an ACC Network television interview, “Ball don’t lie.” Only a technicality kept him from the top of the conference podium a year earlier, but this time, Lloyd got to keep his top honor.

Women’s 200 Backstroke

After swimming the fastest time ever in the 200 backstroke in November, Claire Curzan came up just a half-second short of her own mark as she pulled away to secure the conference title. Curzan never trailed in the event, and she finished in 1:47.38, the fifth-fastest performance in history. Only Curzan, Regan Smith, Beata Nelson and Kathleen Baker have ever posted quicker times. Curzan’s win is her first individual triumph this week after finishing third in the 50 free and second in the 100 fly while contributing to three relay wins.

Second place went to Leah Shackley, an NC State freshman who put together a spirited effort to finish in 1:48.73. She moved into the all-time top-20 in the event and to No. 4 in the national rankings behind Curzan, Virginia’s Gretchen Walsh and Florida’s Bella Sims. Cal’s Isabelle Stadden came in third in 1:50.30, just ahead of another NC State freshman, Erika Pelaez (1:50.56).

Men’s 200 Backstroke

Cal is well on its way to securing a conference win in its first year competing in the ACC, and the Golden Bears accumulated another 108 points in the 200 back final. Leading the way was Gabriel Jett, a senior better known for his success in mid-distance freestyle and butterfly but excelling in backstroke this year. Jett had already finished second in the 500 free and fourth in the 200 fly this week, and he pulled away from teammate Destin Lasco to claim the win in 1:37.19. Only Jonny Marshall of Florida and Hubert Kos of Texas have gone quicker this season.

Lasco claimed second in 1:38.21, holding off a strong back half from Virginia freshman David King (1:38.36). Lasco is the three-time defending NCAA champion in the event, and his best time of 1:35.37 is the fastest in history, recorded at last season’s NCAA Championships. NC State’s Oleksandr Zheltiakov took fourth (1:38.78), followed by the Bears’ Keaton Jones (1:39.81).

Women’s 100 Freestyle

Gretchen Walsh in the pool for a college race always means a record could go down, and the Virginia senior gave her own American, NCAA and U.S. Open records in the 100 free a shake in her last individual event at the ACC Championships. Walsh was out in 21.40, matching the pace of her 44.83 record performance from last year’s NCAA Championships. She was slightly slower on the way home, splitting 23.80, on the way to a time of 45.20.

Walsh was four hundredths off her own meet record from last season, and the time was the third-quickest performance in history behind two of her own marks. She is by far the top swimmer in the country in the event, with runnerup Torri Huske coming in almost nine tenths back despite clocking a time that moved her to No. 2 in the national rankings.

Huske concluded her individual slate with this runnerup finish after winning the 200 IM and 100 fly earlier in the competition. Her mark of 46.09 makes her the sixth-fastest performer in history in the event. Virginia’s Anna Moesch was third in 46.76, tying her season-best and remaining No. 4 in the national rankings behind Walsh, Huske and Tennessee’s Camille Spink.

Men’s 100 Freestyle

While Jack Alexy has not posted any times close to his best this week, he has consistently performed as Cal’s leading sprinter, and in the 100 free final, he came through to win his first individual ACC title. After trailing NC State’s Kaii Winkler at the halfway point, Alexy closed in 21.42 to finish in 41.19. The time is strong but only good for No. 7 in the national rankings thanks to impressive swims from Jordan CrooksJosh LiendoGui Caribe and Chris Guiliano at the SEC Championships plus results posted earlier this season by Arizona State’s Jonny Kulow and Ilya Kharun.

NC State’s Quintin McCarty, the runnerup in the 50 free, came in second her at 41.45, while Virginia Tech’s Brendan Whitfield edged NC State’s Jerry Fox for third, 41.60 to 41.67. Winkler fell to sixth in 41.76.

Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Alex Walsh went wire-to-wire in the last individual event she will swim at the ACC Championships, but she had to deal with a late surge from Stanford’s Lucy Bell. Walsh is the second-fastest performer ever in the 200 breast, owning a best time of 2:02.07, and she grabbed the win here in 2:03.65. Bell, meanwhile, stuck closer than expected to Walsh on the final 100 yards as she finished in 2:04.60.

Those two times are the best in the country this season, well ahead of the third-best time held by Duke’s Kaelyn Gridley. Bell has now dropped an incredible 10 seconds in the event this season. She entered her junior year with a top time of 2:14.68, having not seriously contested the event since high school, but she dropped into 2:06 territory in November before reaching the 2:05s in January and now 2:04, her latest effort moving her ahead of two-time Olympic champion Rebecca Soni for No. 14 all-time in the event.

Two other Virginia swimmers occupied the next two spots, Aimee Canny (2:06.75) and Emma Weber (2:07.47), while Gridley ended up fifth (2:07.71) ahead of the field’s fourth Cavalier, Leah Hayes (2:07.92).

Men’s 200 Breaststroke

Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti concluded his run at the ACC Championships with another win in the 200 breaststroke, adding to his win in the 200 IM three days earlier. Coll Marti, the short course world champion in the 200-meter breast in December, had to fend off Cal freshman Yamato Okadome, who had the lead at all three intermediate splits. But Coll Marti came home in 28.51 to secure the top spot in 1:49.62, beating his meet and conference record of 1:49.69 set three years ago while setting the top time in the country this season. No other swimmer has cracked 1:50 thus far.

Okadome came in second at 1:50.19, and Louisville’s Denis Petrashov took third in 1:50.35. Those men rank third and fourth, respectively, in the national standings behind Coll Marti and Florida’s Aleksas Savickas. Louisville’s Jacob Eccleston came in fourth at 1:51.03.

Women’s 400 Freestyle Relay

The Virginia women had already smashed the all-time bests in the 800 free and 400 medley relays this week in Greensboro, and they came close to knocking off the mark in the 400 free relay as well. The same team who captured the medley relay standard Friday evening, Claire Curzan, Anna Moesch, Alex Walsh and Gretchen Walsh, returned to in the pool for the 400 free relay and clocked a time of 3:05.93.

The Virginia team finished just nine hundredths off the American, NCAA and U.S. Open records posted by the Walsh sisters, Kate Douglass and Maxine Parker at the 2023 NCAA Championships. They did take down the meet record of 3:06.83 set by the Walshes, Douglass and Lexi Cuomo in 2023.

Curzan led off in 46.74, two hundredths faster than Moesch swam for third in the 100 free earlier in the night and good for No. 3 in the country for the event. Moesch followed with a split of 46.80, slightly slower than Louisville’s Julia Dennis, but then the Walsh sisters went to work. Alex clocked 47.46 and Gretchen pulled even further ahead as she blasted a 44.93 split, the fastest in history. She previously had posted a 45.17 at last season’s NCAA Championships.

Louisville’s team finished second in 3:09.71, with Dennis going 46.77 for the quickest non-Virginia split of the race. Gabi AlbieroCaroline Larsen and Lucy Mehraban also competed. NC State’s team of Olivia NelErika PelaezLily Christiason and Leah Shackley placed third in 3:10.00. Stanford’s Anna ShawLillie NordmannGigi Johnson and Kayla Wilson took fourth in 3:10.71. Notably, Torri Huske was ineligible to swim on this relay, having already contested three individual events and four relays.
