Vita Vea‘s request to be traded by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has New York Giants fans dreaming of putting the two-time Pro Bowl nose tackle in the middle of the defensive line alongside D.J. Reader.
It is a nice dream.

Tony DelGenio and I discussed the idea at length in our training camp preview podcast. Giants’ GM Joe Schoen should absolutely call Bucs’ GM Jason Licht to inquire about whether Vea is actully available and what the price tag might be. BBV’s Chris Pflum took the same stance a few days ago.
After being forced to trade Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals, the Giants were fortunate to sign Reader, a quality run-defending nose tackle. The 32-year-old Reader isn’t Lawrence, though. He’s not Vea, either.
Vea, 31, is a 6-foot-4, 347-pound monster in the middle who can both defend the run and get to the quarterback, something Lawrence could do but Reader cannot. Vea has 35 sacks in eight seasons, and has not had fewer than 4.0 in a season since 2021.
Acquiring Vea sounds tantalizing. It would make the Giants better in 2026, no doubt. Is it smart, though, or even feasible?

Probably not.
The Giants have only five selections in the 2027 NFL Draft, one which is currently thought to be historically deep in available talent. Those selections are in the first, second, third, fith and sixth rounds. The Giants traded their fourth-round pick to the Cleveland Browns to select Malachi Fields in the 2026 NFL Draft, and sent their seventh-round pick to the Miami Dolphinsin the Darren Waller deal.
They don’t have draft capital to give away.
Vea likely has a few more good seasons left. Acquiring him, though, would mean giving him a lucrative long-term deal. That might not be smart with a player already on the wrong side of 30, especially since the Giants are not yet in position to contend for a championship.
Vea as a Giant sounds nice. There are a lot of reasons why it should not, and probably will not, happen.
