The El Paso Times will honor high school athletes this year every week that you, the readers, help determine. We will be taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the El Paso Children’s Hospital High School Athlete of the Week at 7 a.m. each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close at 3 p.m. each Thursday, and the winners will be announced Friday.

Here are this week’s nominees:

  • Danny Torres, Eastwood cross country. Torres finished in 12th place at the Mike Nationals meet in Oregon, finishing the race in 15:37. Because of his 12th-place finish, he was named an All-American.

  • Cason Golding, Coronado basketball. Golding made a game winning jump shot to give the Thunderbirds a 61-60 home win vs. Andress.

  • Danae Gonzalez, Burges basketball. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the Bumblebee Classic, scoring 60 points in four games. She also scored 12 points in a non-tournament game vs. Montwood.

  • CJ Quirino, Pebble Hills basketball. Quirino had a strong week, including helping the Spartans win the Willie Cager Tournament in El Paso. Among his big games were 19 points vs. Parkland, 16 points vs. Harmony and 18 points vs. Socorro.

  • Emma Balsiger, Franklin basketball. Balsiger became the all-time leader in made 3-pointers at Franklin when she made her 185th made shot from beyond the arc.

  • Devin FalkRamirez, Eastwood basketball. Falk-Ramirez had some strong offensive games, scoring 32 points vs. Arlington Seguin, 15 points against A&M Consolidated, 22 points vs. Denton Ryan and 18 points vs. Heritage.

  • Mia Hairston, Montwood basketball. Hairston helped the Rams to a third-place finish at the Franklin Tourney, scoring in double figures four times. Against Burges in a non-tournament game, she had 11 points and nine rebounds.

  • Jayden Leverette, Chapin basketball. He averaged 20.6 points, 10.1 rebounds and 5.7 blocks per game at the Mansfield Spring Creek Classic.
