Washington Commanders Free Agency: Veteran NFC West CB visiting today

by

The NFL world was buzzing with draft updates from Ohio State’s Pro Day yesterday, but the Washington Commanders are still working on filling their 90-man roster. There are a lot of unsigned players available, and one of them will be in Ashburn today. Mike Garafolo reported that the Commanders will be hosting former 49ers/Rams CB Ahkello Witherspoon for a free agency visit today.

Witherspoon(6’2″, 215 lbs) just turned 31 this month, and is preparing for his 10th NFL season. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 3rd round of the 2017 draft. That was the year current Commanders GM Adam Peters was hired as the Niners’ Vice President of Player Personnel. Witherspoon left in free agency after playing out his rookie contract, and was briefly on the Seahawks, before being traded to the Steelers. He only started 13 games over two seasons in Pittsburgh. He had his first season as a full-time starter after he joined the Rams. Witherspoon’s three-year stint in Los Angeles ended with him suffering a scapula injury twice last season.

The Commanders still need to add cornerbacks to a thin roster. They signed former Lions DB Amik Robertson in free agency, and they have Trey Amos and Mikey Sainristil returning for another season. Adam Peters can draft someone like LSU’s Mansoor Delane in next month’s draft, but they still need more depth. Witherspoon played on a 1-year, $1.255 million contract last season, and would be a bargain addition to the roster.
