There was a marathon of a game in the WNBA on Sunday, June 28.
The Washington Mystics beat the Portland Fire 124-123 in four overtimes.
You read that right FOUR OT.
Sonia Citron scored the winning layup for the Mystics with 21.4 seconds left at CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C. to break the team’s two-game losing streak and avoid a landmark fifth overtime. It would have been the first matchup in WNBA history to reach a fifth overtime period.
Portland’s Bridget Carleton sent the game into the fourth overtime by scoring a jumper with 3.1 seconds left in the third extra period to tie the game at 116.

Citron led the Mystics with a career-high 32 points. She was one of three players to notch 30 points. The others were her teammate Michaela Onyenwere and Fire guard Carla Leite, who led Portland with 32 points. Citron played 53 minutes and Carleton played for 51 minutes.
There has only been one other four overtime game in WNBA history, which the Mystics were also a part of. Per the league, Washington played the Seattle Storm on July 3, 2001 in the other extra long matchup, which they won 72-69.
