Georgia basketball came within a missed Asa Newell tip at the buzzer from sending its game with No. 1 Auburn into overtime when the Tigers left with a 70-68 win Jan. 18 in Athens.
Auburn will have national player of the year candidate Johni Broome this time after he missed the first game with an ankle injury.
Georgia (16-10, 4-9 SEC) has had a chance to get in some rest and recharge for the closing five-game stretch of the regular season and make a push to get an NCAA Tournament berth.
The Bulldogs have lost eight of the last 10 and three straight, but had time to focus on themselves with a week between games before turning their attention to Auburn (24-2, 12-1).
Georgia has had trouble protecting halftime leads. Against Missouri last Saturday, the Bulldogs led 41-38 but were outscored by 16 in the second half in the 87-74 loss.
Coach Mike White switched up practices this week to include an actual halftime in the middle. Players went back to their film room before later returning to the court.
“We tried to replicate the game and see what’s going on with us,” freshman forward Asa Newell said.
White on his radio show said guards Silas Demary, who played all 40 minutes, and Blue Cain who played 35, “were tired,” after the half against Missouri.
“We’ve got to find some more production in the backcourt to where we’re not having to play those guys 40, especially on the road Saturday at Auburn,” White said on his radio show this week.
White said Georgia needs to get Dakota Leffew and De’Shayne Montgomery going and have Tyrin Lawrence (hamstring) return. Lawrence is listed as out and would miss his third straight game.
Montgomery had three turnovers against Missouri.
“What gave them problems was our ability to trap the ball screen and took the ball out of Demary’s hands and allowed someone else to execute,” Missouri coach Dennis Gates said.
White said Georgia was too casual with the ball. The Bulldogs are second to last in the SEC in league games in assist/turnover ratio and has 131 assists to 170 turnovers.
Auburn is sixth in the SEC in turnovers forced in league play at 12.5.
