Georgia basketball carries the SEC’s longest current winning streak into Saturday’s game with Vanderbilt.
The Bulldogs have won three games in a row in a conference that could get 13 of its 16 teams into the NCAA Tournament.
That’s put Georgia (19-11, 7-10 SEC) in a good position to take part in March Madness after losing nine of its previous 11 games.
“I’ve got to say this, I can’t bite my tongue,” Georgia coach Mike White said after a 73-64 win Tuesday at South Carolina. “I don’t read a lot of that stuff and I don’t listen to a lot of it, but some of it finds its way to you. To say, what’s wrong with Georgia, they’ve lost 9 of 11, I don’t think that’s the appropriate question. Where’s the context, the narrative? We lost nine games to nine really, really good teams. …I want to say we were the underdog in maybe all nine. We’re thankful we won the other two. It’s the best league in the history of college basketball.”
Vanderbilt (20-9, 8-9) appears safely in the field under first-year coach Mark Byington, the former Georgia Southern coach from 2013-20. He also took James Madison to the NCAA Tournament round of 32 last season.
Byington brought Georgia Southern to Stegeman on Dec. 23, 2019 and lost 73-64 to Georgia.
The Commodores are coming off 90-77 home loss to Arkansas on Tuesday night.
“We couldn’t keep them out of the paint, we couldn’t stop them from driving on us,” Byington said.
Vanderbilt has four players scoring in double figures, led by North Texas transfer Jason Edwards from Parkview High in Lilburn at 16.7 points per game.
Georgia is holding opponents to 42.5% shooting in SEC games, fourth best in the conference.
