Today marks the dawn of a new era in the storied Louisville vs. Kentucky basketball rivalry.
After both programs weathered coaching changes during the same offseason for the first time since 1930, Pat Kelsey leads the Cardinals (6-4) into Rupp Arena to battle Mark Pope‘s fifth-ranked Wildcats (9-1).
UK holds a 39-17 advantage in the series, which dates back to 1913 but didn’t become an annual blockbuster on the commonwealth’s sports calendar until the 1980s. Under former head coach John Calipari, the Cats went 13-3 against the Cards from 2010-23.
U of L is looking to snap a two-game losing streak — with a 21-point average margin of defeat. It hasn’t won in Lexington since Jan. 5, 2008 and owns a 5-21 road record in the series.
