Louisville women’s basketball will go for lucky No. 7 when it hosts Syracuse today.
During the Cardinals’ six-game winning streak, they’ve averaged 77 points per game. They’ll now go up against a Syracuse team that won its first ACC game Sunday, defeating Miami, 66-61, at home. The Orange was previously on a three-game losing streak and had lost four of its last six games. Only one of the losses — a 72-71 overtime defeat against SMU — came by single digits.
But that still isn’t enough to make U of L head coach Jeff Walz overlook Syracuse. The ACC can point to Pitt’s record-setting comeback victory over SMU as evidence of not overlooking an opponent and not letting up until the final buzzer sounds.
It’s a lesson the Cardinals (12-5, 5-1 ACC) are still learning while being able to win after seeing their 17-point lead over Georgia Tech dwindle to single digits in Sunday’s 69-60 victory.
“This Syracuse game’s the most important game on our schedule, and it’s going to give us an opportunity to hopefully get to 6-1 in the league,” Walz said. “But if we don’t show up, and if we’re not prepared and take them as seriously as I know our staff is, it’s very easily where we’re going to be 5-2 in the league.”
