Notre Dame women’s basketball will meet Atlantic Coast Conference newcomer California in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament today in Greensboro, N.C.
The Irish (25-4, 16-2) are the No. 2-seed in the tournament, therefore receiving a double-bye into the quarterfinals. Cal (25-6, 12-6) is the No. 7 seed and had to get past Virginia in Thursday’s second round to advance to play the Irish. The Golden Bears made quick work of the Hokies, 75-58.
In the regular-season matchup, No. 6 Notre Dame solidly beat then-No. 21 California, 91-52, at Purcell Pavilion on February 9. Hannah Hidalgo had 24 points in that game while Olivia Miles and Sonia Citron each scored 16.
The Irish lost two of their last three regular-season games, falling to tourney No. 1 seed NC State in double overtime in Raleigh, N.C., before falling at home to tourney No. 4 seed Florida State. Notre Dame ended on a brighter note by beating tourney No. 6 seed Louisville last Sunday at home.
The winner of today’s 5 p.m. contest will advance to play in the conference semifinal on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. (ESPN2). It will play the winner of No. 3 seed Duke (23-7) vs. Louisville (21-9) quarterfinal, which will tip off at 7:30 p.m. Friday (ACCN). Louisville needed overtime to beat Clemson, 70-68, Thursday night to advance into the quarterfinals.

Olivia Miles wins ACC Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of Year
Grad student Miles has been named the ACC’s Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year. The honor is given to a top women’s basketball player in the ACC who excels academically and athletically.
In 3.5 years, Miles earned an undergraduate degree in political science. She is now pursuing a degree in nonprofit management.
