JACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville State football quarterback battle is coming to a close.

On Sunday, both offensive coordinator Clint Trickett and supposed front-runner Gavin Wimsatt talked to the media. Trickett has been pleased what he’s seen with the Kentucky transfer in Wimsatt, and said the room is looking to put even more on his plate.

“I’ve been very pleased with all of them. Gavin especially. He’s came in and done everything we’ve asked him to do. Sometimes people think when you come from a Power 4 to a Group of 5, they’re settling. That’s not at all what’s going on here, if anything we’re putting the foot on the gas a little more,” Trickett said. “I’ve been very pleased from Day 1, he’s been an extremely coachable kid, person and enjoyable to coach. Everything we’ve asked him to do from top to bottom, on and off the field. That’s why hopefully he’s seen some improvements. I’ve seen a lot in him and we’re going to continue to do that.”

It’s not just Wimsatt who has taken strong strides this offseason, Trickett has seen it from his full quarterback room, including the two incoming freshmen.

“We’ve seen that in the rest of the room, Cade Cunningham from when I had him at Marshall, completely changed, developed. Very excited about the way he’s progressed and for Caden Creel as well. Kid does a phenomenal job in there when he gets his opportunities of creating and making things happen. Couldn’t be more delighted about his deep ball accuracy as well. The two young freshman, Jack Moran and Kadyn Mitchell, have done a phenomenal job as well as our stalwart Greg Jones.”

Wimsatt is a transfer from Kentucky, where he played in eight games last year. Before that, he was at Rutgers. Over a four-year career and 33 games, he has thrown for 2,824 yards with 17 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. Cade Cunningham is another option. He is a transfer from Memphis and Marshall but has not recorded any stats in his career.

“For me, one of the biggest things coming in here was growing as a quarterback all through the spring and summer and training camp. Each and every day that has been the goal. I think that’s been going on; growing everyday. Also just to help out the other quarterbacks in the room, especially when Kadyn Mitchell he tells me remembers seeing me at Rutgers, playing for them. Just stuff like that, I’ve realized I’ve been playing college football for a long time,” Wimsatt said.

Other options include Caden Creel, who was the lone scholarship quarterback on the Gamecocks roster when Charles Kelly and Trickett took over. The Gamecocks also added freshman Jack Moran and Kadyn Mitchell this summer.
