Wisconsin officially announced the addition of former San Diego State transfer guard Nick Boyd on Tuesday.
Boyd joins the Badgers after an excellent senior season with the Aztecs in 2024-25. He started all 31 of the team’s games and averaged 13.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.9 assists while shooting 41% from the floor and 35% from 3.

That breakthrough campaign as the leading scorer on an NCAA Tournament team follows four years at Florida Atlantic. The 6-foot-3 guard was a key contributor on the Owls’ 2022-23 team that made an improbable run to the Final Four. He averaged 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game that season, plus tallied 12-point performances against both Tennessee in the tournament’s Sweet 16 and San Diego State in the Final Four.
Wisconsin coach Greg Gard cited that big-game experience when discussing Boyd’s addition.
“We are thrilled to add someone as talented and experienced as Nick,” Gard said in a release. “He is a big-time leader and winner and we know he’ll fit into our locker room from day one. He’s been on the biggest stage, starting for Florida Atlantic’s 2023 Final Four team, and played a lot of high-level basketball. Everyone we talked to throughout the process stressed his tremendous leadership and his ability to impact winning. He wanted to test his game at the highest level and add to a program with a winning culture. We think this will be a great fit for both Nick and Wisconsin.”
247Sports lists Boyd as a four-star transfer prospect, ranked as the No. 50 overall player in the portal and No. 13 point guard. Wisconsin edged North Carolina for his commitment, one of many positive headlines for the Badgers this transfer cycle.

Boyd projects to slot into Wisconsin’s starting backcourt alongside emerging star John Blackwell, assuming he withdraws from the NBA draft. While question marks exist about his fit in the lineup, as is the case with any transfer, he appears a near-perfect addition: a veteran guard with versatile scoring ability, a 37% 3-point-shooting clip, the ability to distribute the basketball and significant postseason, including Final Four, experience.
Gard emphasized the guard’s fit with the program in his first public comment since his commitment. It’s easy to see what the Badgers head coach means by that fit, and what made Boyd one of his top transfer targets.
