Kim Caldwell is back on the sidelines for Tennessee women’s basketball in its top-20 SEC game against South Carolina — one week after giving birth to her first child.

The first-year Lady Vols coach, during media availability on Sunday, announced her plans to return to the sidelines after she and her husband Justin Caldwell welcomed their first child. No. 17 Tennessee is scheduled to tip off against No. 2 South Carolina at 7 p.m. ET at Food City Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Caldwell, who is coaching for the first time in a “power conference” after being hired as Kelly Harper’s successor in Knoxville, has led Tennessee to a 15-4 start to the season (3-4 in the SEC). The Lady Vols are coming off a four-point loss to No. 7 Texas on Thursday, which Caldwell missed.

Kim Caldwell and husband Justin named their first child Conor Scott Caldwell.

As noted by Knox News’ Cora Hall, Kim Caldwell’s late father was name was Scott Stephens. He died in 2020 at the age of 65 from a brain tumor and was one of Kim Caldwell’s assistant coaches for four years at Glenville State.

When did Kim Caldwell have her baby?

Tennessee formerly announced on X (formerly Twitter) before the Lady Vols’ road game at No. 7 Texas on Thursday that Kim Caldwell had given birth to a baby boy. The post on X was dated for 7 p.m. ET, one hour before tipoff between the Lady Vols and Longhorns.

“Mom, dad and baby are doing well,” the team wrote in a statement on X.

Kim Caldwell announced during media availability on Sunday that she actually gave birth on Monday, Jan. 20 and returned to practice on Friday, when the Lady Vols returned to Knoxville. As previously reported in a separate article from Hall, Kim Caldwell’s mom, Linda Stephens, is moving to Knoxville to help take care of Kim Caldwell’s child through the remainder of the season.

Also noted in that same article, Caldwell joins women’s volleyball coach Eve Rackham Watt as the second Tennessee coach in recent years to give birth during her first season on Rocky Top. Rackham Watt gave birth to her son, Jude, in November 2018.
