SOUTH BEND – So much for that proclamation from Notre Dame basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry.
Instead of coming true, it’s deja vu for the Irish as the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament begins this week.
Noie: Could Notre Dame basketball figure it out in another close ACC contest?
Last March, at the end of his first season as head coach, Shrewsberry stood in a locker room of Capital One Arena in downtown Washington and told his Irish to look around. Having lost to Wake Forest in the second round of the ACC Tournament, Shrewsberry asked his players to remember well all that had happened that week – a first-round win over Georgia Tech started the tournament the previous afternoon.
A Good Guard: Did a big week from Markus Burton help Notre Dame basketball break ACC honor streak?
Notre Dame, Shrewsberry said after the Irish season ended, would never again play the first game on the first day of the tournament.
Guess where Notre Dame (14-17; 8-12 ACC) finds itself as the ACC Tournament opens Tuesday at Spectrum Center in Charlotte? Playing the first game on the first day as the No. 12 seed against No. 13 Pittsburgh. The winner advances to meet No. 5 North Carolina in Wednesday’s second round.
Notre Dame was the No. 13 seed last season.
The Irish enter postseason winners of two straight to end the regular season, capped by a 112-110 victory Saturday over Cal in four overtimes.
