What Tom Izzo had to say following Michigan State’s NCAA Tournament win over New Mexico

by

As has become customary this season for Michigan State basketball, the Spartans took a punch from a scrappy opponent in New Mexico on Sunday night, then adjusted and responded in the second half to win the game, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen where they will face Ole Miss next.

After the game, Tom Izzo and his players spoke to the media, and you can see everything Tom Izzo had to say below:

  • Izzo opened the presser with a hilarious joke, saying that when they are in Atlanta, Coen Carr will be buying the meals.

  • Izzo was very complimentary of New Mexico, saying it was ‘as good as a barrage as has hit us’ in the first half.

  • Izzo said that they used a ‘six eye’ defensive technique against Donovan Dent, meaning every time he had the ball, they wanted at least three guys to have eyes on him. He said he thought it worked pretty well although he did note it was probably the reason why they left some shooters open in the first half.

  • When asked more about the first half, Izzo said that he felt they didn’t guard well enough, but turned it on in the second half.

  • Izzo again emphasized that New Mexico is a very good team, and also noted that his team isn’t going to ‘out-talent’ anybody.

  • When it was pointed out that Izzo has now tied Jim Boeheim for the fourth-most NCAA Tournament wins ever, he laughed and said that he ‘never sees any banners hanging for those kinds of things’.
