The No. 8-ranked Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team will host the sixth-ranked Duke Blue Devils at Food City Center in Knoxville on Sunday, in what should be one of the better exhibition games of the NCAA hoops preseason.

Rick Barnes’ Vols and Jon Scheyer’s Blue Devils both have high hopes for 2025, and these programs have always played each other tight. They have split their lifetime matchups 8-8, with Tennessee winning three of the past five meetings and four of six on its home floor.
This will mark just the second time in the 21st century that these teams will have met. The only other time they clashed since 1976 was in the NCAA March Madness Tournament Round of 32 in Orlando, FL in 2023. The Volunteers won that matchup 65-52 but lost one round later to FAU.
The Vols are 25-1 in their last 26 exhibition games, and 15-1 in preseason play since the start of Barnes’ tenure. They’re coming off a run to the Elite Eight in the 2025 March Madness Tournament, which saw them ultimately lose to eventual National Championship runner-up Houston.
Tennessee will have its toughest preseason test in a while, though, as Scheyer’s squad is coming off a Final Four run and a strong offseason. Washington State transfer Cedric Coward, Cameron and Cayden Boozer and Nikolas Khamenia all lead a stacked Duke team that could very well be the best in the nation.
