Where Wisconsin sits in the latest USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll

by

Wisconsin basketball (17-5, 7-4 Big Ten) dropped to No. 19 in the latest edition of the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

Greg Gard’s group fell two spots following a 1-1 week that included a narrow 76-68 loss to Maryland and a come-from-behind 75-69 victory over Northwestern. Those results shifted the team’s coaches poll vote total from 214 to 151.

Still, the Badgers remain the third-highest-ranked Big Ten team behind only Purdue (No. 7) and Michigan State (No. 9). Michigan (No. 22) and Maryland (No. 24), both unranked in last week’s edition, leapfrogged several programs to land in the hierarchy. Other notable movements include Illinois (down from No. 20 to No. 25) and Oregon (down from No. 18 to unranked.

Auburn remains atop the latest coaches poll top 25 after a 2-0 week improved the team to 20-1. The Tigers are followed by Duke (19-2), Alabama (19-3), Tennessee (18-4) and Houston (17-4). Arizona (15-6) made the greatest jump up 10 spots to No. 20, while Mississippi State and the Ducks plummeted out of the top 25. Kansas, finally, dropped from No. 11 to No. 17 following a road loss to Baylor.

Wisconsin’s big win road win over Northwestern, paired with Arizona’s statement win over Iowa State, likely saved the Badgers from falling even further in the ranking. The Badgers now sit at No. 14 in KenPom and No. 23 in ESPN’s BPI after the 1-1 week. Their next contest is a Tuesday night home matchup against Indiana.
