Who is the most overlooked Detroit Lions player?

by

The Detroit Lions’ roster is nearly at 90 players, and it can be hard to keep track of everyone. With new players being added all offseason long, some players who have hung around from last year or longer have been pushed down the depth chart and maybe even forgotten by some more casual fans.

So in today’s Question of the Day, we’re going to talk about some players who aren’t talked about enough or downright ignored by most fans.

Today’s Question of the Day is:

Who is the most overlooked player on the Lions’ current roster?

My answer: If you need a reminder of what the Lions’ 2026 depth chart looks like, you can head to our breakdown following the 2026 NFL Draft. That list doesn’t include the nine UDFAs or the recent signings of linebacker Joe Bachie, defensive tackle Jay Tufele, or wide receiver Cedrick Wilson. So feel free to slot those players wherever you deem appropriate.

Scoping the roster, a few names stick out that haven’t been mentioned much at all this offseason.

The first is safety Dan Jackson. While Jackson is buried quite deep on our depth chart (listed as seventh on the list), he could very well make the roster and play a role. After losing all of his rookie season to an injury last year, the Lions’ 2025 seventh-round pick enters this season with a ton of competition. The additions of Chuck Clark and Christian Izien could be enough to push him off the roster entirely. But with a very strong special teams profile, it would not surprise me to see Jackson earn a spot on the 53, especially if Detroit will be without Brian Branch and possibly Kerby Joseph to start the year.

I also think people are sleeping a little on defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike. While a healthy amount of skepticism is more than fair for Onwuzurike, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL, all of 2022 with a back injury, and only played in 10 games in 2023, the former second-round pick has also been a pretty effective player when healthy. And with the versatility to play essentially every single role on the defensive line, he’s a strong bet to have a well-sized role if he can avoid injury this year.
