The Daytona 500 kicks off the NASCAR Cup season today at Daytona International Speedway.
Chase Briscoe, a Mitchell, Indiana, native, starts from pole position, with 2022 Daytona 500 champ Austin Cindric − the son of former Team Penske president Tim Cindric − on the outside of the front row. At the back end of the starting grid are two-time Daytona champ Jimmie Johnson − a four-time Brickyard 400 winner and seven-time Cup champ − and four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves.
William Byron, who starts 5th, won last year’s race. Other Daytona 500 winners in today’s field include Denny Hamlin (2016, ’19, ’20), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (‘;’23), Michael McDowell (’21), Austin Dillon (’18) and Joey Logano (’15).
Castroneves is driving this race using a provisional that allows a world-class driver a spot in the field, even if he didn’t qualify through normal procedures. Castroneves crashed out of a 150-mile qualifying race Thursday night.
