Sue Bird knows when she sees a WNBA championship contender. Guess what she sees in the Indiana Fever.
The WNBA legend explained why she loves the Fever’s offseason moves during the “A Touch More” podcast with soccer legend Megan Rapinoe.
The Fever acquired veterans Natasha Howard, Sophie Cunningham and DeWanna Bonner over the past couple of weeks. They also have a returning coach in Stephanie White. Throw that in with established Fever players Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston and Lexie Hull, and Bird sees as an “immediate contender.”
On Howard: “I loved … loved … playing with Tash (from 2018-20 in Seattle).
“She’s just this glue player that doesn’t get enough shine for what she does. A lot of what she does doesn’t show up in the box score, but she’s just always in the right place at the right time.”
On Cunningham: “A 3-and-D type player. … She’s also just tough. She’s mentally tough. She’s physically tough, and brings an edge to them.”

On Bonner: “That took (the offseason moves) to another level. They’re a contender.
“The biggest thing about DB joining this team is that she’s already played with (White).”
Bird, whose resume includes 13 All-Star appearances and four league championships with the Seattle Storm, said quickly developing chemistry will be critical for any team considering themselves a championship contender.
