Wickliffe boys basketball: Walter Cable becomes all-time leading scorer for Blue Devils

by

Three schools’ boys basketball all-time scoring records fell on Feb. 11, all three in CVC. Two came in the Jefferson vs. West Geauga match-up with Anthony Covetta and Landon Lear setting the marks for their respective teams.

The third occurred at the Campus of Wickliffe with Blue Devils senior Walter Cable. Cable became the fifth player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points when he reached the mark on Jan. 17.

He added another accolade on Feb. 11. When Cable hit a 3-pointer with 51 seconds left in the fourth quarter, he surpassed Frank Fitz for the all-time scoring mark for the Blue Devils with the new mark of 1,183 points. Along the way, he also passed Ethan Nobbe (1,014), Anthony Olsen (1,053), Dustin Kinney (1,088) and Wilmore Gilmour (1,104).

Fitz set the mark of 1,180 in 1963.

“Despite us losing which was not what I wanted at the end of the day, I definitely was blessed and in shock a little,” Cable said. “I’ve put in so much work and for great accomplishments like this, and for it to come it just shows the work I’m putting in is working. I knew I was close.”

Cable has been the leading scorer for the Blue Devils the past three seasons, averaging 12.8 points as a sophomore with 12.8, 23.1 as a junior and 22.5 this season.

This season, he’s rounded more into an all-around player. He has been more effective on the boards and with the ball in his hands, getting a number of his teammates involved.

Cable is also among the area leaders in steals with 3.2 per game.

“It has helped a lot this season,” Cable said. “I tried this year and worked a lot in the summer and in general in becoming an all-around player and not just score which made it easier and the team I have made it easier as well.”

In Cable’s sophomore season, Wickliffe had four seniors with underclassmen galore.

The Blue Devils had three straight single-digit winning seasons before Cable’s senior season. This year, the team turned the corner as a unit.

With nine seniors on the roster, the Blue Devils finished the regular season 10-10, the first double-digit win total for the Blue Devils since 2019-20, and they will host a playoff game in the second round of Division V.

“There’s been some ups and downs but overall great for me,” Cable said. “Other than losing, being around everyone in Wickliffe they all have, throughout my years, supported and been there for me. I’ve met a lot of people and made some great friends on and off the court. It’s been really fun.”

He said having his name cemented in Wickliffe history is a huge moment, and he will carry it with him the rest of his playing career.

Cable also knows that can catch the attention of college coaches. But reaching the top of the list wasn’t necessarily one of the goals that he focused on coming into high school.

“This record means a lot and is a big accomplishment for me because when I first moved here my goal was to win and make a name for myself or sort of a legacy in the city of Cleveland and in Wickliffe High School as well,” Cable said. “Breaking records like these makes me feel like I’ve or am doing that. I’m humble and blessed though of course because without God , family, my teammates, Coach (Marc) Lewis and all of the other coaches throughout these years and just school of Wickliffe in general, I wouldn’t be in this position. Just got to keep grinding and staying focused through it all and I know more great things will come.”

Cable and the Blue Devils return to the court Feb. 22 to start the D-V postseason with a home game against 27th seed Shaw at 1 p.m.
