Will Deion Sanders and Colorado face setbacks to start 2025 season? originally appeared on The Sporting News
Deion Sanders has been away from the Colorado Buffaloes Football program for a majority of the offseason dealing with cancer treatments. With that said, the question remains one week before the start of the 2025 season is will the Buffs be ready to compete this upcoming football season?

Colorado has landed some great recruits that could play significant roles in their success. However, new talent being mixed with the current playmakers, and not having your traditional ones for the first time ever could be a red flag to open up. Coach Prime was able to land some athletes that can add depth, but this offseason was on the assistant coaches. Will Sanders face a smooth hand off in responsibility in non-conference or will there be setbacks?
The Buffs wide receiver room landed a few more playmakers to go along with Omarion and Drelon Miller. Joseph WIlliams from Tulsa and Sincere Brown from Campbell will be nice additions. Brown has made big claims that he is going to put on a show this season like Randy Moss did when he was playing football at Marshall. On the other hand, Williams, who was a former quarterback in high school, will be able to find the openings within a defensive coverage to receive passes from quarterbacks Kaiden Salter or Julian Lewis.
Colorado will run a balanced offense that will feature a rushing attack without Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Shedeur Sanders. The Buffs landed Simeon Price from Mississippi State and Dekalon Taylor from Incarnate Word, who will be able to keep things balanced for the Buffs offense. They’ll be in the rotation with Micah Welch and Dallan Hayden for Hall-of-Famer turned coach Marshall Faulk.
The expectations for the Buffaloes are extremely high compared to when Coach Prime first arrived in Boulder. This is no longer inheriting a one-win team and hoping for the best possible outcome. Sanders has grown over the past two years as a coach as well. The passion he started out with coaching the Buffs football program, is it still there? Is he rushing himself back to the sidelines too fast?
Sanders did say he will have preventative measures in place for when he has to relieve himself because of the latest health scare. A comforting sign for him, but can that lead to short-term problems? All valid questions for a coach months removed from major surgery to rid himself of cancer.

Sanders and the Buffs have the most NFL experience on their sideline. There’s nobody contesting that factor, but that doesn’t equate to wins. For all the additions like Faulk, Warren Sapp being promoted, and Byron Leftwich signing on the dotted line, they still lost offensive line coach Phil Loadbolt and defensive coach Vincent Dancy to Mississippi State.
In the meantime, Coach Prime put out a tweet last week looking for bass fishing recommendations around Boulder. It kind of makes you wonder just how good this team will be during the upcoming season? A trophy catch or throw em’ back?
In the past, Sanders was ready to get on the field and compete against an opposing player. But now, the fire seems to have died down a bit. Just outside observations before arguably the biggest non-conference test during Coach Prime’s tenure. With everything that has happened since the Buffaloes Spring Game, you have to ask, will this team be ready to compete at the beginning of the 2025 football season?
