Wisconsin basketball’s social media team added playful stakes to Tuesday night’s win over the Washington Huskies — it awarded the Badgers the exclusive rights as Big Ten’s one ‘UW.’
After the Badgers’ decisive 26-point triumph, it shared a screenshot of the University of Washington‘s updated Wikipedia page — showing that the school was “formerly known as UW” after it “lost the rights to the name when the University of Wisconsin-Madison (the true UW) beat them in a basketball game on Feb. 25, 2025.” That update, to no surprise, has since been corrected.
Tuesday was the first meeting between the Big Ten’s two UWs on the football field or men’s basketball court. It should begin a constant back-and-forth with playful rights to the ‘UW’ name at stake. The two will next meet on the Camp Randall Stadium football field on Nov. 8 of this upcoming season.
Until then, Wisconsin claims a temporary victory over its West Coast counterpart.
UW basketball improved to 22-6 on the season and 12-5 in Big Ten play with the decisive victory. It now sits just 1 1/2 game behind both Michigan and Michigan State for first place in the Big Ten standings. Saturday’s matchup between the Badgers and Spartans will be played with the conference race at stake.
Washington basketball, meanwhile, dropped to 13-15 (4-13 Big Ten) with the loss. It is in danger of missing the 15-team cutoff for the upcoming Big Ten Tournament.
