Wisconsin wing John Tonje ranked among college basketball’s impactful 2024-25 transfers

by

Wisconsin star wing John Tonje was included in On3’s ranking of college basketball’s most impactful transfers of the 2024-25 season on Friday.

Tonje, in his first year under Greg Gard, landed at No. 5 in the 10-man list. Only Memphis guard PJ Haggerty, Michigan forward Danny Wolf, Texas Tech forward J.T. Toppin and Kentucky center Amari Williams slotted ahead of the Wisconsin star. Former Wisconsin guard Chucky Hepburn also made the list at No. 6 on the list.

Given Tonje’s dominant form, leading Wisconsin to its current No. 11 position in the AP Poll, it’s surprising to envision any other transfer having a larger impact. While Memphis’ Haggerty and Texas Tech’s Toppin have certainly made monumental impacts on their new squads this season, Tonje has transformed Wisconsin’s offensive attack into one of the most efficient in the country.

Through 27 appearances this season, the former Missouri wing is accountable for 19.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 30.7 minutes. Those numbers come on a 48.5% shooting clip from the field, 41.1% from three and a staggering 91.0% from the free throw line. At this pace, he’s inching towards becoming college basketball’s first 50-40-90 player since Trey Murphy III in 2020-21.

What makes Tonje’s season even more impressive is his execution in the program’s most important games this season. He dropped 41 points against then-No. 9 Arizona in November, 32 points on the road against Purdue on Feb. 15 and 31 against a formidable Illinois crew on Feb. 18.

Tonje will look to continue his dominant form when the Badgers host the Oregon Ducks on Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center.
