WNBA is coming to Philadelphia: Expansion franchise announced for 2030 season

The WNBA is coming to Philadelphia.

The league announced its expansion plans Monday, adding three new cities – Cleveland in 2028, Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030.

“What a great day, Philadelphia, the W is coming,” Josh Harris, managing partner of the Philadelphia 76ers and co-founder of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE), said at the expansion press conference. “To the city of Philly, this is your team. Philadelphia is a city that is about sports and basketball in particular, including generations of extraordinary women’s basketball talent.

“Bringing the WNBA to Philly wasn’t just nice to have, it was an obligation,” Harris said. “We have an opportunity to build something special. Philly deserves the best women’s basketball team in the world and attracts the best women’s basketball talent.

The WNBA will have 18 franchises.

According to NBC Philadelphia, the franchise will be based in South Philadelphia and will be owned and operated by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE).
