The Phoenix Mercury are one of the biggest surprises in the 2025 WNBA season, sitting second in the West with a 12-4 record. That follows a tumultuous 2024 campaign in which they made it to the playoffs with a losing record (19-21) but only lasted one series against the eventual finals runners-up, the Minnesota Lynx.

With Diana Taurasi’s retirement and after losing other key players such as Brittney Griner, Sophie Cunningham and Natasha Cloud, the Mercury went out and added pieces to try to compete for championships again.

Satou Sabally arrived in the valley in a trade with the Dallas Wings, while Alyssa Thomas found her way to Arizona in a separate trade with the Connecticut Sun.

After beating the defending champions for the second time this season (89-81 on June 19 and 106-91 on Friday night) and extending their winning streak to six games, Thomas sent a clear message about the media’s lack of coverage of her new team.

Speaking with reporters, Thomas explained how every player on the roster bought into what coach Nate Tibbetts wanted to achieve. She sent a message to the media, too, saying they remain focused on themselves and are not paying much attention to who is or isn’t talking about them.

“I mean, I think it started in training camp,” Thomas said. “Just everybody buying into what we wanted to do this season. No one had been talking about us, but you know, we don’t care. We’re going to do what we do each and every day, and I think that’s what’s so special about it is that everyone’s on board. We go out there each and every day and compete.”

Only the Lynx (13-2) boast a better record than the Mercury. They have a solid squad that is performing better than expected, perhaps becoming the menace many thought the Indiana Fever would be.

Sabally stated that when great players work together, the results come, and the Mercury are looking like a real threat to the top squads in the league.
