The WNBA entered a new era on Wednesday. A historic agreement between the league and the players’ union created a chaotic free agency period. The new Collective Bargaining Agreement raised the salary cap to $5.75 million in the first year. This is a 280% jump from the 2025 total of $1.5 million. Amid this financial shift, Kelsey Plum and Dearica Hamby found themselves at the center of a social media storm.
Broadcaster Chris Williamson sparked the conversation with a prediction about the future of the Los Angeles Sparks. He posted a “hot take” regarding the next destination for Plum, who is an unrestricted free agent for the 2026 season. The Indiana Fever and its front office want to surround Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston with veteran talent.

“Hot take: Kelsey Plum leaves Sparks to go to the Fever lol,” Williamson tweeted.
The WNBA champion star used a short response to stop the noise. Hamby saw the tweet from Williamson and jumped into the replies. She wrote:
“Plz. lol”.
Los Angeles Sparks forward Hamby and Plum have won the 2022 championship together with the Aces. While the media gushed over the potential move to the Fever, Hamby made her feelings known.
Plum, previously on the Bird’s Eye View podcast, said her departure from her former team was driven by a desire for a fresh start. She admitted that playing on a roster full of stars felt limiting.

“I felt like I needed a fresh start. I need a fresh start personally. I need a fresh start professionally. I felt like my growth was kind of capped in Vegas. I could finish my career in Vegas and be an All-Star a couple more times, try to go back with championships, but can I ever reach the capacity of the player I know I can be?”
Now, she might have a choice to make. The Fever has three players on rookie contracts include Clark, Boston, and Makayla Timpson. Clark and Boston are two of the top 10 players in the WNBA. Adding a future Hall of Famer would change the legacy of the franchise.
The Fever faces pressure to protect its current roster in expansion drafts for the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo. Free agency officially begins April 12.

Whether two-time WNBA champion Kelsey Plum stays or goes, only time will reveal.
