WNBPA Makes New Statement on CBA Negotiations

It appears the CBA talks between the players and the league are not moving toward a solution at the moment. It becomes clear after a latest statement released by the WNBPA executive committee.

The statement comes in response to a recent player survey conducted by the WNBA. The players were asked whether they will accept the league’s proposal of 50% of net revenue which is less than 15% of gross revenue in an eight year deal or will they ask the Union to keep negotiating?

Sharing a clear stance over this proposal survey, WNBA released a statement on Wednesday while underlining that “the goal of the league and teams is to divide the players. These negotiations are no different.”

Further, the statement highlighted that the initial call for a strike, if necessary, was not taken lightly. “It was made with complete faith and trust in ourselves and our negotiating committee, led by Executive Director Terri Carmichael Jackson and President Nneka Ogwumike, to represent all players as we work to build a W that truly puts players first.”

Per the WNBPA, “Nothing has changed. That decision, and the results of our recent player survey, reaffirm that the current league proposal is not worth taking.”

This statement was co-signed by the WNBPA President Nneka Ogwumike along with First Vice President and WNBA player Kelsey Plum. Other players such as Alysha Clark (Vice President), Napheesa Collier (Vice President) and Breanna Stewart (Vice President) also signed it.

The latest response makes it clear that players will keep on negotiating till they get a fair CBA deal. “We will not stop fighting. There is no WNBA without the players.” March 10 is the deadline for any solution to come out. At the moment, however, the chances look grim.
