Women’s Basketball Coaches Poll: Alabama continues to rise in new Top 25 rankings

Jan 28, 2024; Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA; Alabama head coach Kristy Curry signals to her team as they play Kentucky at Coleman Coliseum Sunday.

The Alabama Crimson Tide women’s basketball team is on the move again in this week’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll following wins over the Florida Gators and Missouri Tigers to open conference play.

Alabama (15-1 overall) rose one spot to No. 19 after beating Missouri, 68-49, on Sunday at Coleman Coliseum behind 23 points from Zaay Green, who also had a game-high 27 points in the Crimson Tide’s 79-69 win over Florida three nights earlier.

The Tide are 2-0 in SEC play for the first time in 21 years since the 2003-04 season under Rick Moody, and their 15-1 overall record is behind only Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers (17-0) among SEC teams.

Kristy Curry’s team will face their most difficult task of the season when they head to Austin to take on the No. 6 Texas Longhorns Thursday at Moody Center. Tipoff for Alabama-Texas is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. The game can be streamed on ESPN+/SEC Network+.

Alabama moved up one spot to No. 18 in the AP Top 25 Women’s Basketball Poll, released on Monday.

The unbeaten UCLA Bruins remained atop the coaches poll for the sixth consecutive week Tuesday after improving to 15-0. Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks (14-1) stayed at No. 2, with Notre Dame (12-2) at No. 3. LSU was No. 4, with JuJu Watkins and the USC Trojans (No. 5, 14-1) rounding out the top five.

The SEC had seven teams in the top 25, including the Oklahoma Sooners (13-2) at No. 11, the Tennessee Lady Vols (13-1) at No. 15, and the Kentucky Wildcats (13-1) at No. 16.
