Michigan Wolverines athletic director Warde Manuel’s future with his school is in jeopardy, according to recent reports. In the past year, several controversies have unfolded during his tenure, including former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore’s arrest in December last year due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Manuel is currently under contract until 2030 due to his 2024 extension.
While discussions are still being done internally regarding Manuel’s future with the Wolverines, Michigan insider Clayton Sayfie posted on his X/Twitter that he believes Big Ten conference analyst John Beilein should be the replacement. Before moving to sports media for the Big Ten, Beilein served as the head coach of the Wolverines’ men’s basketball team. But CBB insider Jeff Goodman shot this down, as he is not a fan of the narrative.
“I think Beilein would be atrocious as an AD in this era of college sports,” Goodman wrote.

Beilein previously coached the Wolverines from 2007 to 2019, bringing them to the NCAA Final Four twice in 2013 and 2018. After a short stint in the NBA, he has returned to college basketball but as an analyst. It remains to be seen if Manuel will be bought out of his contract. Even so, Beilein’s name will likely be floating around as a potential athletic director given his history with the Wolverines.

The silver lining for Warde Manuel and his future after the Sherrone Moore controversy is that the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team won the 2026 NCAA championship. Heading into next year, the Wolverines will have a new coach, though, in Mike Boynton, who was serving as an interim. Even with the change, Jeff Goodman recently said on the Field of 68 that the Wolverines are still a team in the preseason top 10.
“I think the roster’s going to remain intact. I think this is a team that’s preseason top-10. No matter how you slice it, Mike Boynton’s been a high major head coach. And again, I think, you know, the biggest question is, again, they got two guys back. They really have two guys back today that, from last year’s team that are gonna be on the court at the start of the season. That’s (Elliot) Cadeau and (Taylor) McKinney for the most part,” Goodman said. (1:06)

The Wolverines will attempt their national title defense next season without the coach that won them the championship, Dusty May, as he has been named as the new head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.
