Women’s 200 backstroke

NC State has three in the A final in its burgeoning backstroke stable, with Erika Pelaez taking the lead in 1:49.59. Leah Shackley was fourth, with Kennedy Noble seventh.

Claire Curzan, the top seed entering the meet, is lurking in second place after a 1:50.16 swim in prelims. She became the second fastest performer in history in the 100 back on Friday night and is the only swimmer with a sub-1:48 time in the field this season. Pelaez is second at 1:49.18.

Pitt’s Claire Jansen in the third seed as the Panthers continues a sizzling meet. Tess Howley is fifth for Virginia, which also got Charlotte Wilson in eighth into the A final.

Men’s 200 backstroke

Josh Zuchowski has been great at this meet, winning the 400 individual medley and finishing fourth in the 200 fly. He’s chasing another title, but with eight A finalists clustered within a second, it’ll be tight. Zuchowski led the way in prelims in 1:39.08, a best time by a half-second.

Second was Virginia’s David King in 1:32.22. Jack Berube of SMU was third with Daniel Diehl of NC State fourth. Cal has two in the A final, Keaton Jones sixth and Humberto Najera eighth, but they’ll need big finals swims to neutralize Zuchowski at the top.

The newest member of the sub-1:40 200 free club is out front, with Anna Moesch leading a Virginia 1-2. The sophomore was first in prelims at 46.20, with Sara Curtis second in 46.85.

If Stanford is going to jump Cal, this has to be the event. Torri Huske is lurking in third at 46.94. Anna Olasewere and Gigi Johnson cracked the A final in seventh and eighth. Cal has Mary-Ambre Moluh in sixth.

Duke’s Tatum Wall makes her third A final of the meet in fifth.

Men’s 100 freestyle

NC State’s early relay DQ took it out of the title picture, but they are laying the groundwork for NCAAs. Quintin McCarty leads the way in 40.88. Kaii Winkler is second in 41.03. Fourth is Jerry Fox, then sixth is Hudson Williams. No points for guessing who the favorite in the 400 free relay is.

Virginia Tech’s Brendan Whitfield is third for Virginia Tech. Julian Koch tied for fourth for Pitt.

In the title race, Stanford pushed Andres Dupont Cabrera into eighth, at the expense of Cal’s Martin Wrede. Cal has three in the B final to 16th-place Rafael Gu for Stanford.

It’s sprint vs. distance in the 200 breast, and in prelims, it’s advantage to 400 IM champ Lucy Bell. She is the top seed with a time of 2:04.82 for Stanford. Second is 100 breast runner-up Anastasia Gorbenko in a college-best time of 2:06.40.

Aimee Canny is going to collect more points for Virginia in third at 2:06.61, with teammate Sophia Umstead in fifth. Gorbenko is joined by teammates Mia Cheatwood in fourth and Kim Emery Herkle in eighth.

Eneli Jefimova, the 100 breast champ, missed the A final, a second slower than her seed in 11th, behind 100 breast medalist Emma Weber.

In the team race, Bell is the only A finalist for Stanford. Caroline Bricker was ninth. Cal’s best swimmer is 15th.
