The Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies played to a 7-7 tie Thursday afternoon and it didn’t have any shortage of storylines.
After the game, players and coaches spoke of the team’s effort and the potential of the starting lineup.
Here are the key things to know from Yankees camp on Thursday:
Jazz Chisholm Jr.-Anthony Volpe tandem
Chisholm has become a valuable and versatile piece for the Yankees, thanks to his time playing third base last season.
While the team tries to figure out their third base situation, which Chisholm is still potentially in the mix for, he started at second base with Volpe at shortstop. It gave coaches and fans a look at what that middle infield tandem could look like in the regular season.
After the game, Chisholm couldn’t help but hype up the potential between the two defensively.
“I think we could be the best shortstop-second baseman in the league, definitely defensively,” Chisholm told the media after the game. “And I think we are probably going to turn the most double plays in the league, too. That would be my prediction for us.”
Chisholm and Volpe turned two double plays on Thursday, but there’s potentially a lot more where that comes from.
Jasson Dominguez’s eventful game in left
Dominguez learning to play left field is a big storyline in camp this spring and it has been an adventure so far for the youngster.
On Thursday, Dominguez had some trouble, especially on one particular play in the third inning.
Edmundo Sosa lined a drive toward left-center field when Dominguez seemingly tracked it down. The outfielder lept to make the catch, and the ball hit his glove and dropped in for a double. The liner actually took the glove off of Dominguez’s hand as the outfielder picked the ball up without it and threw it back into the infield.
“It was about as tough a play as you’re going to have, but we still have work to do, obviously,” manager Aaron Boone told the media, including MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
The double allowed a run to score and knocked starter Carlos Rodon out of the game after allowing three runs over 2.2 innings.
The Yankees are determined to give their young outfielder a long leash. Boone said that Dominguez is going to get every opportunity to win the starting left fielder spot and GM Brian Cashman said he wants Dominguez to “get his shot.”
