West Virginia defensive coordinator Zac Alley wants to do a little bit of everything on defense.
Some of it will be based on his personnel, while other calls will be based on what he wants to accomplish on that side of the ball. And the former Oklahoma defensive coordinator has a good feel for the mix.
“There are things I know are successful that are hard on offenses that we want to do but on the flip side, if we’re not good at some of those things, then we’re gonna find ways to manipulate it so that our players are in positions to win, and to be successful, and good at whatever it is that they do,” he said.
Something that Alley is always trying to figure out is how to put the right guys in the right positions to be successful within the scheme.
That means trying to find favorable situations for all of the players on the roster.
“If a guy’s a good blitzer, I’m trying to blitz him. He’s not good in man, I’m not trying to play him in man,” Alley said. “And so if I can do both of those at the same time I would love to do that.”
There’s a weakness to any call but if you’re trying to put stress on somebody it would preferably be the best players on that side of the ball.
“Try and engineer that if you can,” Alley said.
