Kentucky basketball didn’t meet its lofty standards in 2025-26, and Wildcats fans will come away disappointed despite having a relatively successful seasons by most standards. Kentucky navigated a very difficult schedule to be a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament and pulled out a miraculous win over Santa Clara in the first round before losing to Iowa State in the second round.

Part of the reason why Kentucky didn’t meet expectations this season was because of some roster building holes, but some of it came back to injuries. Point guard Jaland Lowe missed most of the SEC slate with a shoulder injury, and star big man Jayden Quaintance played just four games due to fallout from a serious knee injury that he suffered in February of 2025.

Now, Quaintance is moving on to the next level. The defensive ace announced on Tuesday that he is declaring for the NBA Draft.

Despite the injury concerns, Quaintance is still viewed as a projected lottery pick because of his athleticism and defensive ability. Further medical examination during the draft process could change that, but for now he is looking at a likely first-round selection.

While he never really got his feet wet with Kentucky, Quaintance showed what he could do during his freshman season at Arizona State. In 24 games that season before going down with the injury, Quaintance averaged 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game.

While the loss of Quaintance was expected, it is still a tough blow to a Kentucky team that certainly would have loved to see what he could do in blue and white after the Wildcats spent so much NIL money to bring him in.

Now, Pope and his staff will turn their attention to building the roster for next season. Kentucky certainly has the resources to assemble talent out of the transfer portal, and the noise around Pope’s ability to lead Kentucky back to the elite of the sport is only going to get louder if he has another season like this one.
