LeBron James has indicated that he’s entering the later stage of his career, but the exact timeline for his retirement remains unclear.
People close to him say he has yet to decide whether he intends to keep playing beyond this season.
What is known is that James will hit free agency this summer.
A return to the Los Angeles Lakers is still on the table, though the franchise is currently focused on preserving flexibility, targeting as much as $50 million in cap space along with three tradable first-round picks.
If he opts to leave, the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers and potentially the LA Clippers are expected to be among the teams he considers.
Each, however, would face challenges in fitting him financially.
The Warriors are close to the tax aprons but might be able to open enough room to offer the Non-Taxpayer mid-level exception, around $15 million.
Cleveland’s situation is tighter, with the team projected to be above the first apron and possibly near the second, leaving only a veteran minimum deal as a realistic option.
The Clippers appear to be the least likely destination, though they would allow James to stay in Los Angeles, with their cap situation hinging on decisions involving several free agents this offseason.
