Despite the high-stakes environment, Wembanyama emphasized routine over emotion, saying, “It is obviously different, but we’ve been really good in the regular season. So we have no reason to act differently or do anything different.”
San Antonio controlled the game behind his scoring efficiency and physical presence, while the French star also pointed to preparation as the key playoff adjustment, adding, “We had a lot of days to prepare and there are specific themes every day of training.”
The Spurs forward also described how the postseason game planning shifts compared to the regular season, noting, “We know everything about Portland. Everyone knows everyone’s plays. Very few tactical mistakes.”
Wembanyama finished with 35 points on 13-of-21 shooting, setting a franchise record for a playoff debut. He also highlighted the emotional contrast of postseason basketball in San Antonio.
“It’s so tough,” he said when reflecting on the crowd atmosphere. “It’s so cool. It’s the loudest the fans got outside of the game moments.”
The Frost Bank Center crowd played a visible role throughout the game, something Wembanyama acknowledged as immediate energy from the opening tip. “The first time I stepped on the court even for warm-ups, I felt the atmosphere was different,” he said.
Beyond scoring, Wembanyama emphasized team connection, including an emotional moment after the final buzzer. He explained his decision to wait for teammate De’Aaron Fox before leaving the floor: “Because nobody walks alone. I mean, it’s all natural.”
San Antonio’s physical response also defined the matchup, as Portland attempted to impose contact early. Wembanyama was clear about expectations for the series, stating, “It’s their identity. Something to be expected, and it’s also to be expected that they will double up on that in the next games.”
The Spurs star also highlighted the importance of maintaining composure during momentum swings, especially in playoff environments where execution tightens. “Everyone knows each other’s plays,” he said, pointing to reduced tactical mistakes as a defining postseason factor.
San Antonio now leads the series 1-0 heading into Game 2 on Tuesday, with Wembanyama already focused on the adjustment process rather than the opening win.
“It’s different preparation,” he said, referencing the extended time between games. “But that’s it.”
